GM, Opel and Poker

Mittwoch, 4. November 2009

I was not surprised to hear that GM decided to keep Opel today. There are numerous business reasons, which I won't go into. It occurred to me that some of the players were obviously not familiar with the game of poker. Otherwise they would have known that they should always keep a 'poker face', be able to call a bluff, try to have an ace in the hole and check for wild cards. Furthermore there is no guarantee for the strongest hand to win.

On construction sites

Mittwoch, 4. November 2009

On construction sites you have to protect yourself, amongst other things with earplugs. It is therefore logical to conclude that not-listening brands, i.e. those wearing earplugs, are construction sites :-)

Was ist Ihnen egal?

Technology, tools and common sense

Dienstag, 3. November 2009

Quiet recently, a car dealer from New Jersey/USA decided to follow me on Twitter. While that's nice, I also thought that it was kind of strange. After all my profile clearly states that my location is Munich/Germany. What does the dealer expect me to do? Board a plane and cross the Atlantic for a test drive? I tweeted about this experience. One of the results is that I'm now also being followed by a car dealer in California. I wonder what will be next.

Technology and tools are great to gather data, but do yourself a big favor and analyze the data before you use it. Otherwise you'll be perceived as an unprofessional marketer sooner or later with negative consequences for your sales and the reputation of the brand that you represent.

Would both dealers even dream about placing an ad in a Munich newspaper? Of course not.

The only metric that ultimately counts is….conversion!

Montag, 2. November 2009

With the emergence of the social web, many people have argued that we need additional, new metrics. Referrals, click-throughs, followers/friends in social networks, unique visitors to a fan page, return visits, quality of comments, requested action taken, subscribers to blogs, time spent on blogs, bounce rates to name just a few. Many tools are offered to analyze brand conversations online. All of this important, relevant and valuable. However it is worth remembering that at the end of the day it is all about conversion and this applies to all media. Let's face it: It is nice if people like a brand and recommend it, but the brand will only stay in business, if it has products that people buy.

Die alten Medien lieben diesen Song:

What companies can learn from the giraffe

Sonntag, 1. November 2009

When all of the low hanging fruits have been harvested, you have two choices. You can either complain, dream about the good old days and ultimately starve to death. Alternatively you can do what the giraffe did, i.e. you can evolve. The evolution of the long neck allows giraffes to reach vegetation that other herbivores can't, which gives the giraffe a competitive advantage. Simple, if you think about it.
